I always wanted to visit Su Gologone from the moment I first met Giovanna during one of the luxury travel shows, heard the story of the place, and seen the photos. It was one of those moments which clicks with your soul, aesthetics, or whatever is responsible for your travel desires and plans.
I should say that I had certain image of Sardinia in my mind by then, and I should confess that this image was a bazaar blend of posh Costa Smeralda hotels and scary stories about remote mountain villages where kidnapped people were hidden and hold for years. But well… one day I met Giovanna, and one day (few years after) I travelled to Sardinia, one of very few corners of Italy which was still terra incognita for me by that time.
Don’t take me wrong, I found Costa Smeralda absolutely gorgeous, and I highly recommend it to my dear clients who like elegant beach clubs, high-branded boutiques, and jet-setters crowd. And oh… the sea is just within the utmost best in the world. But let me be back to something very different and speaking directly to my heart. Su Gologone it is.
The story of Su Gologone starts in previous generation when parents of Giovanna took the risk of creating first proper restaurant in remote area of Sardinia, serving local traditional food based on very local ingredients. Important to say that local cuisine and local ingredients are seriously good. I mean… they are to die for. That good that connoisseurs would not mind to drive two hours from posh Costa Smeralda to nowhere for this sucking pig slowly cooked on spit.
At some point, it became clear that fabulous restaurant in remote location needs accommodation too. And that is how Experience Hotel Su Gologone started and developed to what we have now – beautiful boutique property surrounded by scenic nature and offering something totally unique to this world.
And now we come to Giovanna which is quite more than hotelier. She is an artist, the character, and she is a proper sarda – the one who is from the place, roots and top, born and raised on traditional colourful crafts which with her endless creativity and energy she transforms to something even more beautiful and colourful – modern ceramic, painting on fabrics, textile and so much more. She is the one behind design of the rooms (each one of a kind), every plate and glass used in the restaurant, masterclasses offered to the guests, and very special ambience of Su Gologone.
What is truly unique at Su Gologone, is an easy going, no effort immersion to Sardinian tradition, authenticity and lifestyle. Every evening you can watch local women baking traditional bread for dinner, some nights there are showcase of local farmers’ produce, star watching, concerts under the starry sky, and tons of hands-on experiences (well, we are at experience hotel!) – cooking lessons, craft lessons, degustations of wine and food…). What I absolutely loved was spontaneous transition from one experience to another, food and wine served in any location at any time – beautiful terraces, comfy seats, stunning views, and this easy blend of contemporary boho stile with deep tradition.
And, well, you have true Sardinia to explore with day trips: local villages, nature wonders, and pristine beaches which are among the most tremendous in Europe.
As a bonus, few photos from visiting local village of Orgosolo famous for its murals, 20 minutes drive from Su Gologone.
And oh… Traffic Sardinian style.
