Romazzino, a Belmond Hotel, Sardinia. Romazzino became an icon in 60th when Aga Khan IV, philanthropist and businessman, captivated by beauty of Costa Smeralda coast, developed his vision of perfect high society retreat in cooperation with renowned architect Michele Busiri Vici.

Since then, Romazzino became one of the favourites among elite crowd, attracting Italian and international socialites, including celebrities like Grace Kelly and Princess Margaret. The hotel blends retro ’60s glamour with authentic Sardinian charm.
I’ve been to Romazzino before, and I’m very curious to see its transformation under recent Belmond’s management, especially when Belmond in its turn became a part of Louis Vuitton and been transformed too. I don’t think the structure will change – it is beautiful as it is, but by next season we should see some serious update of the rooms. That is why I didn’t do much of room photos in anticipation of major reconstruction.

Yet property is stunning as it is: soft lines of Sardo-Mediterranean architecture, tremendous views, lash gardens, lovely details, and oh the views again.

I should consider Romazzino’s beach one of the best resort beaches in Sardinia, and Sardinia is no short of the best beaches in Italy if not in whole Europe. Transparent emerald green to blue waters are quite in accordance with the name of the coast, while whimsical rocks typical for this area add some interest.

Well, expect your F&B to be pricey. You are in jet-setters lands. And if you are not that type of spender, I will be happy to suggest decent and truly enjoyable alternatives. But shhh… as it happens, you pay for the company which was around for a while and not found in more affordable places. The food is great, no doubts. Nothing too fancy, just true Sardinian and Italian cuisine based on freshest seafood, local ingredients and traditions.

And oh the details. They may not be trendy minimalistic modern type of things. They are kind of heritage. But this is a heritage of old money if you know what I mean. Not to show up but to cocoon and entertain with old worlds’ perfect imperfection: colourful crafts, natural materials and expensive simplicity.

Tip: For a very special experience, I would suggest boat ride to Maddalena archipelago. Truly exceptional. The only other place in the world which has this type of sculptural stones is Seychelles.
