I’ve been travelling to Morocco quite few times, and, to be honest, my first time was a hesitation. I didn’t really know what to expect, and I was kind of not sure if Arabic culture is my cup of tea.
I remember my very first visit to Medina of Marrakech on my own, everything is yelling, moving, busting with smell and colour around me, someone passing me by scooter, and donkey, and moped, someone showing snakes and reptiles to my face, and me feeling insecure, holding my bag and camera close to my body… Well, there was an old lady in traditional clothing sitting on the curb and staring at me unapologetically. My first thought was that something is inappropriate with my clothing or behaviour. My second thought was to smile. The generous, open, natural smile which I’ve got in return marked my first step of falling in love with Morocco.
I’ve done long way since then. I was staying at the best hotels of Marrakech, I crossed Atlas mountings, I slept in the middle of nowhere in Sahara outside of my safari tent gathering to the desert stars, I played berber drams that emotional that my fingers were like sausages next morning, I photographed Essaouira fishermen resting after morning fishing, I swam at Tagazout Bay, visited remote villages, learned from local women how to shell organ nuts… I happened to be in Marrakech at the moment of devastating earthquake in September 2023. Not my favourite experience ever but truly remarkable.
All I want to say, it is amazing country. Open, generous, emotional, multicultural, surprisingly tourist friendly, and as authentic as it can get. Enjoy, and feel free to contact me for your perfect Moroccan itinerary. [email protected]
